You might get a canon D60 within budget, but this will probably be body only so you would need to budget for a lens as well.

You might get a canon 300D with a lens for a little more.

Both these models are failry old now, you could get a new sony or pentax from around £250 if you shop around. I would recommend you do this instead.

One other way is if you have a printer that takes memory cards you can remove your card from your Camera and upload your pictures that way.

I agree with being very careful to erase the photos from the card until you are very sure they are on your laptop.

As long as you don't mind the extra bulk of an SLR I'd absolutely suggest one. SLRs have much larger sensors than point-and-shoots (including the bridge P&Ss) and thus take pictures that are much less grainy and have much richer colour.

Even if you have no desire to use the manual features of an SLR it will still be great for you as all new SLRs have full auto modes.

A previous poster commented that the kit lens is crap but I'd ignore that. It may be crap compared to a $ 2000 lens but it's still much better than the lenses on even the most expensive point-and-shoots.

As for the XTi, I'd highly recommend it. It's a great beginning SLR. Don't worry about it being lower-end - the features that make the expensive cameras "high-end" are really only features that appeal to someone with quite a bit of experience in photography.

Once again, as long as you don't mind the extra bulk of an SLR you'll be very happy with the XTi or any other DSLR.

In your case absolutely not. For that money you'd be much better off with a high end point and shoot such as a Canon G series. These cameras have near SLR functionality and their image quality is great.

The reason I'm saying this is that the 18-55mm lens is a "kit lens". It's designed specifically to be thrown in with a camera at little cost to Canon. It's build quality is cheap, it's optical quality is poor, and it actually ends up being a 29mm-88mm due to crop factor, which is not particularly impressive compared to a high end point and shoot.

If you want to buy an SLR be prepared to spend a few thousand dollars on good quality zoom lenses in the focal lengths you plan to use, or buy fixed focal (no zoom) length lenses that will still run you hundreds of dollars each.

For purchasing, try going to shopping.com (not shopping.aol) and type in the name of the camera. Then a list of stores comes up for the camera you pick. It shows weather they are trusted and how reliable, with reviews of many peeps that have purchased from each store.
Thats how i got my camera.
The online store was called buydig.com
it worked out great.

Heck yes. I went DSLR four years ago after having "regular" digital cameras for a few years. More options, better lenses, better quality pixels, interchangeable lenses - the list goes on forever!

A larger learning curve, but it's worth it. Canon just released new DSLR's, so the older models are selling for bargains.
